General Cleaning Recommendations For Glass
There are basic guidelines that, if followed, and in addition to those referred to specifically for toughened glass, will avoid scratching of the glass surface during cleaning. To ensure the longevity and clarity of glass, it’s crucial to follow some general cleaning recommendations for glass.
What Not To Do
Do not use cleaners that contain hydrochloric or phosphoric acid, as they are corrosive to the glass surface.
Do not clean glass when it is hot or is in direct sunlight.
Do not allow cleaning solutions to contact the edges of laminated glass, insulating glass units (double glazing) or mirrors.Do not store or place other material in contact with the glass. (This can damage the glass or create a heat trap, leading to thermal breakage.)
Do not use abrasive cleaners, powder-based cleaners, scouring pads or other harsh materials. Avoid using tapes or adhesives that can stain or damage glass surfaces. Ensure any tapes or adhesives that are used are known to be easy to remove later.
What To Do
Avoid scratching and marking the glass surface, the glass should be cleaned using only cleaning materials that are free of grit and debris.
Only use detergents and cleaning solutions that are produced and recommended specifically for glass cleaning. Mild detergents are preferable.
Extra care is necessary where high performance and special products such as Low-E Glass, self cleaning glass and other solar control high-performance and coated glass is installed. The surfaces of these can be susceptible to stains and scratches and therefore requires vigilance during the full construction process and require specific cleaning procedures.
